Fort Steilacoom Park Bird Watching

Fort Steilacoom Park, Lakewood

8am-11:30am.  Join John Riegsecker and Diane Yorgason-Quinn of Tahoma Audubon for a field trip to a local hot spot featured in the brand new Puget Loop of the Great Washington Birding Trail -- Fort Steilacoom Park!  Enjoy this freshwater oasis in the heart of the urban area at the very beginning of the neotropic bird migration.  We expect to see just-hatched ducklings of several species and if we're really lucky, baby coots.  We will be looking for early flycatchers and perhaps an early Black-Throated Gray Warbler, as well as Savannah Sparrows and House Wrens, as this is one of the few places in western Washington they nest.  Meet at the I5/W512 P&R near McDonalds at 8am, or if you know how to get there, meet at the Fort Steilacoom Park red barns parking area at 8:30am.  Expect an easy walk around the Waughop Lake first, until about 11:30am.  If anyone wants to stay longer, we'll go uphill to the old orchards.

Apr 27-May 20   (253) 588-0042

Lakewood Playhouse "The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940"

5729 Lakewood Towne Center Blvd SW, Lakewood

The creative team responsible for a recent Broadway flop (in which three chorus girls were murdered by the mysterious "Stage Door Slasher") assemble for a backer's audition of their new show at the Westchester estate of a wealthy "angel." The house is replete with sliding panels, secret passageways and a German maid who is apparently four different people-all of which figure diabolically in the comic mayhem which follows when the infamous "Slasher" makes his reappearance and strikes again-and again. As the composer, lyricist, actors and director prepare their performance, and a blizzard cuts off any possible retreat, bodies start to drop in plain sight, knives spring out of nowhere, masked figures drag their victims behind swiveling bookcases, and accusing fingers point in all directions. However, and with no thanks to the bumbling police inspector who snowshoes in to investigate, the mystery is solved in the nick of time and the "Slasher" unmasked-but not before the audience has been treated to a sidesplitting good time and a generous serving of the author's biting, satiric and refreshingly irreverent wit.  $28 general, $25 senior/military, $21 under 25 years of age, $17 under 15 years of age.
